Charles V. Pollack Jr, MD, MA, FACEP, FAAEM, FAHA, is Professor and Chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine, Pennsylvania Hospital; and Professor of Emergency Medicine at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, both in Philadelphia. Dr. Pollack is a former Lieutenant Commander (select) in the United States Navy Medical Corps, a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, American Academy of Emergency Medicine, and American Heart Association, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. His research interests include chest pain evaluation and management, venous and arterial thrombosis, and acute severe hypertension.
Dr. Pollack earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and history and his MA degree in the history of science and medicine from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated summa cum laude and was elected to both Phi Beta Kappa and Emory’s Stipe Society of Scholars. Dr. Pollack received his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. At graduation, he received both the Tulane Medical Alumni Association Award and the Creech Award for scholarship in surgery. Dr. Pollack completed a surgical internship at US Naval Hospital, San Diego, and then spent two years as a general medical officer with the Marine Corps and two years as an attending physician in the emergency department at Naval Hospital, prior to serving his emergency medicine residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Dr. Pollack has been active in teaching and clinical research and is a national leader in emergency medicine. He is on the editorial board of Journal of Emergency Medicine, and is a reviewer for Annals of Emergency Medicine, Academic Emergency Medicine, and Journal of Emergency Medicine, among others. Dr. Pollack has written more than 150 original research articles, chapters, and abstracts, and lectures internationally on many varied topics in emergency medicine.
