This activity is intended to provide hospitalists, critical care specialists, critical care nurses, general surgeons, health-system pharmacists, oncologists, and other health care professionals with clinical education on venous thromboembolism prophylaxis.
Multiple studies have shown that VTE prophylaxis is routinely employed in fewer than half of patients at risk, despite the availability of guidelines and multiple pharmacologic therapies. This practice gap among health care providers, including specialists in critical care and emergency care, hospitalists, oncologists and surgeons, can be partially addressed by educational initiatives that raise awareness of known VTE risk factors, recent guidelines, the benefits and risks of current and emerging therapies, and long-term VTE risk management in patients transitioning to an outpatient setting. Hospitals vary widely with respect to VTE prophylaxis policies, creating a further need for practical support and education that can be utilized in individual institutions to raise awareness and promote active management of VTE risk. These educational initiatives have the potential to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality arising from this serious but preventable complication.
